Its Indonesian independence day on the 17th. It the 70th anniversary so they are going all out with the red and white bunting.

Dukuh Patra, Kuningan

Our trip from Canberra to Jakarta started in panic when the booked taxi failed to show up. We eventually hailed a taxi going by, but it was too small for our many many bags. The wonderful security guard at the apartment took pity on us and personally drove the other half of us and our luggage to the airport. The flights went well, we enjoyed business class lounges (the teenagers tried to eat all their danishes but they kept bringing more) and business class flights. We arrived full of food and fairly refreshed to Jakarta. After a long wait for our bags we were picked up by a colleague of Alison and a fleet of SUVs (one for the many bags and one for us) and taken through the chaos of the streets to our new home. Our new home is in a South Jakarta not too far from the embassy. It’s a big house with marble floors throughout. Wayang Museum

Last weekend we went back to Kota Tua with Tess a young intern at the Embassy and this time visited the Wayang Museum, This a puppet museum with a large collection of Indonesian puppets from shadow puppets (Wayang kulit) to wooden doll puppets (Wayang golek) and everything in between. The collection was good with some really old and intricate puppets but let down by fairly indifferent presentation. An Indonesian guy; Ki Edan Aldy Sandjoyo ( actually this is just part of his 18 word name, naming all ancestors back 18 generations ) came up and started explaining bits about the shadow puppets. He convinced us to come back to his studio where his 74 year old father makes the shadow puppets from buffalo hide and he gives performances and runs a studio to attempt to train younger Indonesians in his art. Rawa Belong Flower Market.

Today we ventured to the Rawa Belong Flower Market which is reputedly the largest flower market in South-East Asia. Most of the action is supposed to happen around 3 AM we got there around 9, and there were still lots of flowers. Catherine loved it, flowers about 1 to 3 dollars a bunch ( for us anyway )
